All over the world currently the highest number of deaths are being caused by the deadly epidemic HIV. When a individual is affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, the body immunity system is attacked and weakened, making the body prone to infections and diseases.

Our dental health of teeth, mouth, gums and tongue are all susceptible to infections as a result of AIDS. Human mouth is full of micro organisms which makes it a fertile ground for infections especially when AIDS has attacked the body.

Researchers have found that Mouth is one of the earliest organs that is effected by AIDS virus causing some of the diseases such as Oral Hairy Leukoplakia, Oral Candidiasis, Oral pigmentation, Gum Disease and Kaposi's Sarcoma.

It is believed that Oral Hairy Leukoplakia is caused only due to AIDS in individuals. When ever you find this condition in someone, we may assume that that individual is suffering from full blown AIDS. The white lesion that appears on the palate, sides of tongue and cheeks is called OHL and it is not possible to remove this easily.

It is believed that over ninety percent of people with AIDS also get affected with Oral Candidiasis. HIV virus kills the body immunity system where by the mouth then gets affected with this fungus. The infection occurs on palate or the tongue and rarely on the lip corners too.

Pigmentation of the teeth cavity is another most visible sign of the fact that the body is affected by AIDS. The brownish black color pigmentation is seen on gums, tongue and palate, caused due to consumption of ketoconazole and Zidovudine drugs.

Gum diseases like Gingivitis and Periodontitis , researchers say effect the persons who are suffering from full blown AIDS .The inflammation of the gums as well as the tissues supporting the tooth can cause bleeding, pus formation; bad odor and infection can spread to other areas too. Anti Retroviral Therapy is used to treat AIDS patients effected with this disease.

Malignant tumor usually occurring on the palate and gums in the AIDS infected homosexual males is called Kapodi's Sarcoma. This condition is more frequently occurring in males and though it is existent, is very rarely found in females.

All these conditions are found in cases where the individual is suffering from AIDS. By understanding more about these conditions, one can perhaps implement preventive care to avoid falling prey and learn to mitigate the risk.

Body gets energy from the food that is processed first though the mouth and further in the digestive system, thereby making mouth and the taste buds a very important part of the body system. We taste the food thorough the taste buds and chew and bite the food with our teeth and mix it properly before passing it down the digestive track for further processing. In case where the mouth gets into a problem with dental hygiene and is not able to do its function properly, the entire food digestive system gets effected and in turn weakens the body. In case of patients with AIDS, such weakness and problems can have serious repercussions.

Important part of Preventive action includes maintenance of good Oral Hygiene at all times. With daily discipline of ensuring you maintain dental health, you will be able to safeguard yourself against all these problems.
